The H5 Academy Youth Basketball and Leadership Program (‘The Academy’). The Academy is a 10-month youth basketball and leadership program in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Operating out of the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) Central Technical School (CTS), The Academy was designed to provide under privileged student-athletes with access to an accredited high school curriculum, work placements, mentorship, and affordable advanced leadership and basketball training. The Academy activities take place in a structured, developmentally-appropriate, and culturally inclusive learning environment and includes mandatory study hall and advanced business and leadership courses to assist the students with the skills necessary to succeed in life, beyond being an athlete.

 

JOB BRIEF

Head Coaches are an empowering force in our coach community, playing an important role in ensuring The Academy and its participants are growing and thriving. Head Coaches embody and represent our standard to be the best on and off the court. They must have administrative, community relations and youth basketball programming experience. They must have a strong presence, leadership skills and be comfortable working in a range of settings including an office, gym, out in local communities and delivering programs in a virtual setting whenever applicable. Most importantly, the Head Coach holds a deep belief in the power of sport for development, and the transformative potential of basketball at an individual, team and community level. 

This is a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary role that requires a team-first mentality and a proactive mindset in responding to challenges and opportunities at the program and organizational level. As a growing organization, the Head Coach is a part of a high performance team and works collaboratively in the implementation of all H5F basketball programming. The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Team (Director of Basketball Operations [DO], Director of Admissions and Academics [DAA]) and will support relationships with many of our external stakeholders including our scholastic and funding partners, vendors, community, government officials, program parents and participants.

 

Coaching, Training and Recruitment 

  • Attend all scheduled basketball games and training sessions; 
  • Creating strategies for the team including but not limited to: the development and implementation of offensive and defensive plays and practice drills; 
  • Assists with all aspects of the recruiting process;
  • Mentor participants to foster athletic, academic, emotional and social growth;
  • Facilitate learning, offer advice, and analyze each player to identify weaknesses and strengths;
  • Lead supervision and engagement of participants and coaching staff;
  • Study participants’ skills and abilities and assign them in the most suitable position for success;
  • Overseeing and leading weekly film sessions as required during the season; 
  • Create and communicate strategies based on the opposing team’s scouting report for H5 participants to succeed.

 

Curriculum Development 

  • Support the design and implementation of off-court programming that maximizes participant engagement and impact through the culture of basketball; 
  • Use professional experience to provide feedback to the executive team, and help to improve the curriculum as necessary.

 

Programming 

  • On-site leadership of program activities and supervision of direct reports;
  • Implement The Academy’s on-court and off-court training and leadership curriculums;
  • Create and distribute bi-monthly participant training and development assessments to the executive team;
  • Ensure program meets the High5 Foundation’s health and safety standards;
  • Support programming partners with H5 Academy program delivery as required; 
  • Support the development and training of coaching staff and volunteers;
  • Lead/Support study hall and weight room sessions as required;
  • Support any H5F fundraising activities and initiatives.

 

Administration 

  • Support the executive team with securing on the ground data, content and program feedback (pre/mid/post participant assessments etc.)  to measure program impact, and participant growth;
  • Support management and digitization of all data from programs including attendance, surveys, session reports, player assessments and pictures/video;
  • Ensure timely and professional communication with participants and parents by sending out calls/send out emails and reminders about program activities;
  • Document all incidents using incident report template with participants/staff/parents/partners an etc..

 

Organizational

  • Prioritize weekly basketball operations meetings with Director of Basketball Operations and Director of Admissions and Academics as required; 
  • Attend regular staff meetings as required.

 

Requirements 

  • Solid knowledge of basketball and its rules;
  • Post-secondary education is considered an asset but is not required;
  • Ability to promote and maintain motivation in student-athletes; 
  • A strong sense of initiative and ownership in order to continuously seek to improve and contribute to the growth and development of H5 Academy and its participants; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (ability to draft a professional and clear email); 
  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience coaching youth, ideally in a small, dynamic organization or 4+ years of playing professional basketball;
  • Experience working with youth ages 14-18 years of age;
  • Reliable, punctual, motivated, team-player that comes to every meeting, practice and games with a positive, enthusiastic, and motivated demeanor; 
  • Strong attention to detail, highly-organized, problem-solving skills;
  • Ability ask effective questions; actively listen and give competent and relevant feedback;
  • Able to communicate effectively with participants respectfully;
  • Proven track record of working with partners on behalf of an organization and the ability to build new relationships;
  • Community-oriented and a positive brand ambassador across interactions with all stakeholders;
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) and GSuite (Gmail, GCal, GDrive & docs), and the ability to learn new software and tools; 
  • Ability to travel to different areas of the province is a necessity;

JOB BRIEF 

The Assistant coach is a valuable component to our coaching team. An assistant coach supports the head and associate coaches by ensuring that equipment and facilities are maintained and by performing minor administrative duties. 

 

Coaching, Training and Recruitment 

  • Attend all scheduled basketball games and training sessions; 
  • Support the instructing of  participants HF Academy strategies including but not limited to: offensive and defensive plays and practice drills;
  • Supervise and engage participants
  • Attending weekly film sessions as required during the season.

 

Curriculum Development 

  • Research and implement basketball and non-basketball drills, games and activities that can develop social or life skills (i.e., teamwork, communication etc.) for the development of The Academy’s Bank of Content. 

 

Programming 

  • Organize travel arrangements including transport and accommodation;
  • Ensure all program sites have the appropriate equipment and supplies needed; 
  • Maintain all equipment bags and storage space keeping them both neatly organized;
  • Support study hall and weight room sessions as required;
  • Support the coordination of team transportation to and from program activities. 

 

Administration 

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate inventory of programming equipment.
  • Execute The Academy’s out of program participant opportunities (i.e., accompanying participants to a Raptors game, team bonding excursion, etc.). 

 

Organizational

 

  • Prioritize quarterly basketball operations meetings with Director of Basketball Operations and Director of Admissions and Academics as required; 
  • Attend regular staff meetings as required.

JOB BRIEF 

The objective is to work in collaboration with team members to develop creative engaging digital, photography and video production media content to meet the High5 Foundation’s programming and promotional needs. They will plan, organize and deliver special summer-long multimedia projects using various media platforms.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Graphic Design 

  • Use digital illustration, photo editing software, and layout software to create designs;
  • Create visual elements such as logos, original images, and illustrations to help deliver a message;
  • Testing graphics across various media;
  • Create and organize all digital media projects using Google Suite.  

 

Photography 

  • Attend weekly programming to gather material required for promotional activities; 
  • Capture subjects in professional-quality photographs;
  • Create permanent visual images for a wide range of creative, technical and documentary purposes.

 

Videography  

  • Ensure the necessary filming equipment is available for use;
  • Editing past film footage and new footage captured at H5F programs; 
  • Film videos on set or on location;
  • Ensure that equipment for a shoot is present and working;
  • Plan the shoot with immediate supervisor;
  • Edit footage in post-production;
  • Direct program staff and volunteers so that the needed footage is acquired.

 

Administration 

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate inventory of programming equipment;
  • Execute H5F’s out of program participant opportunities (i.e., attending team bonding excursions, etc.).

WHO WE ARE 

Through our curriculum-based programming the High5 Foundation (H5F) offers free and subsidized year-round community arts, sport development and fitness and education and training programming for under-served and under-represented children, youth and women residing in the Black Creek, Glenfield-Jane Heights, Humbermede, Oakdale-Beverley Heights, Rustic, South-Parkdale, and Regent Park Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIA’s), as well as, the City of Vaughan and the Fort-York/Spadina, Harbourfront communities.

 

JOB BRIEF: 

The High5 Foundation is looking for an energetic Co-ordinator, arts and crafts programs (Job ID: #4220419) who is passionate about researching, planning and supervising camp activities based on the individual needs of the youth. Activities generally include arts and crafts, sports, nature, songs, and an element of educational programming. They must demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the High5 Foundation and have a passion for working with children and teaching them new skills.   

 

Primary responsibilities

 

Program Management

 

  • Attend weekly meetings necessary to accomplish required work.
  • Support planning and coordination of a program and its activities
  • Track and support the reporting of project deliverables to High5 Foundation and community stakeholders
  • Program evaluations 
  • Attend relevant meetings including seasonal team meetings & community partners meetings
  • Supervise and manage camp counsellor staff during program activities. 

 

Programming 

  • Plan, organize, implement, and lead age-appropriate activities for children;
  • Provide one-on-one support to campers;
  • Research and teach a range of indoor and outdoor and online activities to staff;
  • Ensure camper safety and monitor their activities;
  • Ensure recreation equipment is secure, sanitized and stored properly;
  • Supervise campers during meals;
  • Brainstorming creative activities and games;
  • Utilize appropriate behavior management techniques;
  • Model good behavior for campers as it relates to sportsmanship, manners, and respectfulness;
  • Identify teachable moments and capitalize on them;
  • Perform all responsibilities in a manner that guarantees the safety of campers;
  • Facilitate and encourage participation in camp activities;
  • Interact with parents in a professional and polite manner.

 

Administration 

  • Keep updated records and support the creation of reports through photos, videos and written reports
  • Facilitate program evaluation activities 
  • Oversee the inventory of programming equipment;

 

Organizational

  • Collaborate with executive team to support growth and program development to engage diverse client-base
  • Attend regular staff meetings as required.

 

Requirements 

  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*;
  • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations;
  • Must be enthusiastic, energetic, and positive;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of arts and crafts activities, initiatives and trends;
  • 2 years of experience supervising and working with children, preferably as a camp counselor;
  • Be a positive role model: To stay on task and engaged throughout the entire day;
  • Ability to pass a background check;
  • General mobility including, but not limited, to walking, kneeling, and standing;
  • Proven ability to maintain a safe environment for others in adherence with provided protocol and standards;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead activities for large groups of children;
  • Ability to perform some spontaneous and individual programming;
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds;
  • Prior experience working in a community context is considered an asset;
  • Access to a vehicle is considered an asset but not required.

 

Time Commitment

The H5F programming activities necessitates different time commitments during the summer season. To accommodate this, availability between the hours of 7am-10pm, Monday through Sunday is required for this position and will vary week to week.  

 

Certification and Software Requirements (The successful candidate will be responsible for covering 100% of fees associated with certification prior to official start date) 

  • Certification in CPR and AED.
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening 
  • Google Suite Applications (Forms, Documents and Sheets)
